Honors Program Chautauqua Series, Fall 2008
Chautauqua. —noun
1. A lake in SW New York. 18 mi. (29 km) long.
2. A village on this lake: summer educational center.
3. An annual educational meeting, originating in this village in 1874, providing public lectures, concerts, and dramatic performances during the summer months, usually in an outdoor setting.
4. Any similar assembly, esp. one of a number meeting in a circuit of communities.
5. One of a series of events, talks, gatherings, etc. hosted by and for Eastern Kentucky University’s Honors Program; students enrolled in HON 100 must attend at least 4 of the following, complete a response form for each, and turn those into their instructors to complete the requirements of that course.
Wednesday, September 17, 7:30 p.m., O’Donnell Auditorium, Student Services Bldg.
“The Assault on Freedom and the Constitution.” A Lecture by Chris Hedges.
Take advantage of the first lecture in the fine free lecture series organized by Dr. Bruce MacLaren; this year, the theme for the University Chautauqua Series is “Freedom.” Chris Hedges, foreign correspondent, Pulitzer-Prize winner, recipient of the 2002 Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism, and author of Collateral Damage: America’s War Against Iraqi Civilians (2008) will kick off the series, the schedule and complete listing for which is attached. Come to as many of these lectures as you can as the speakers are amazing and many of your professors and classmates will also be there; each lecture will count as one Honors Chautauqua event. Email Dr. MacLaren at Bruce.MacLaren@eku.edu if you’d like to join any of the speakers for dinner in the Powell Building before each lecture. Dinner would be your responsibility—all the lectures are free—but you can use your meal plan. Watch for more details about the other lectures in the series on the honors email list serve. While we want you to attend as many of these as you can, use no more than two to satisfy your Honors Chautauquas for HON 100.
Giles Gallery, September through December
An art exhibition
Visit any ONE of this semester’s shows in the Giles Gallery—Jason Urban and Dan Younger (September 2-30), Susan Morrison and Nancy Charak (October 6-29), Brenda Jones and Robert Davila (November 5-20) or the Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition (December 7-19)—see all of the artists’ work featured in the gallery, fill out a response sheet, and get credit for one Honors Chautauqua. You are limited to ONE of these events to fulfill your Honors Chautauqua requirements. The Giles Gallery is located in the Jane F. Campbell Building on Crabbe Street; call (859) 622-8135 for the hours when the gallery is open. The Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition features the work of graduating seniors and includes an opening reception (free food!) Sunday, December 7, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. For more information about the artists, see the attached detailed gallery schedule.
EKU Music Concerts, September through December
EKU’s fine music department hosts some 100 concerts each year, events featuring faculty performers, students performers, and distinguished artists from across the nation (and beyond!). Go to any ONE concert, almost all of which are free, complete your Chautauqua response form, and receive credit for that event. You are limited to ONE of these events to fulfill your Honors Chautauqua requirements. Remember that you need to arrive at the venue where these are held before the start time and stay throughout the entire concert! See that attached brochure for exact information on each concert.
Friday, September 26-Saturday, September 27, all day both days
Kentucky Honors Roundtable at the University of Louisville
Join us for a trip to Louisville, Kentucky for the fall meeting of the Kentucky Honors Roundtable (the state-level organization of honors programs in Kentucky) on September 26 and 27. The Roundtable will include dinner and a fun event on Friday with student presentations taking place on Saturday. This is a great opportunity to see what kind of presentations other students give so that you can think about your own future participation in state and national honors conferences. Sign up sheets are in the study room in Case Annex 163 on the bookcase and are due back to Linda or Debra no later than September 15. Please think carefully about your personal schedule and prior obligations before committing to this event. Those of you spending Friday night in Louisville need to sign up on the rooming list posted on the bulletin board outside of my office (Case Annex 169). There is NO COST for you for this event.
Sunday, September 28, 11:00 a.m. departure
Otello, an Opera by Giuseppe Verdi
If you have never been to an opera, this is a fabulous opportunity to experience wonderful opera as part of an overall wonderful evening. Otello was first performed in 1887 and was Verdi’s second to last opera; based on Shakespeare’s play, Othello, Verdi’s Otello is considered by some to be his finest tragic composition. A story of love, deception, betrayal, and murder, Otello features the Moor Otello, governor of Cyprus and general in the Venetian army, his lovely wife Desdemona, and the treacherous Iago, Otello’s ensign.
We will travel to the Kentucky Center for the Arts in Louisville for the 2:00 pm performance; meet at the Daniel Boone statue at 11:00 am. Bus transportation will be provided and Dr. Neil Wright will discuss the opera with us as we travel to Louisville so that we will be better prepared for and appreciative of the performance itself. There is NO COST to you for this event. Fifty tickets will be available for this event, 26 of which will be claimed by Dr. Wright’s honors students. Make your reservations with Debra or Dr. Wright by September 19th. Bring your own lunch to eat on the bus as we won’t be stopping for lunch; a post-opera meal will be provided for us by our gracious friends, Jane and Charles Boyer. If we’re lucky, some of the performers will probably join us at this time.
Thursday, October 2, 8:00 p.m., Gifford Theatre
Doubt: A Parable by John Patrick Shanley
Hit EKU’s Gifford Theatre in the Campbell Building to see this Pulitzer-prize winning play! John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt: A Parable premiered in 2002 and both asks and answers the question of what we do when we’re not sure. The Washington Post says that Doubt “is the wonderfully apt title of John Patrick Shanley’s remarkable new play about paranoia and pedophilia in the Catholic Church. Where the molesting of a child is concerned, the doubt of others is of comfort to the guilty and a torment for the falsely accused.” According to the original New York cast who performed the 90-minute play in one act, the second was performed outside the theatre when audience members debated what they’d just seen. Student tickets are normally $6.00 but your cost is a cheapo $2.00. Sign up and pay your $2.00 to Debra by September 30th to reserve your seat. Linda will be in the lobby of the Campbell Building by 7:40 pm on October 2 to pass out the tickets.
Thursday, October 30, 6:00 p.m.
An Honorable Halloween Celebration!
Come do Halloween with the Honors Program! We’ll have a weenie roast, scary stories, and games planned by the Honors Program Student Advisory Council. Our site this year will be on a remote section of campus; get a map from Debra or in the study room in Case Annex 163. Bring your favorite scary story to read around the campfire and a bag of chips or something for dessert. Costumes are encouraged but not mandatory. There is NO COST for this event. Rain location: Living Center in the Burrier Building.
November 19, 20, 21 at 8 p.m.
November 22 at 2 pm and 8 p.m.
Dance Theatre Concert
Come to the auditorium in the Student Services Building at 8:00 pm on any of these four evenings or the 2:00 pm matinee on November 22 and enjoy a performance by the students involved in the EKU Dance Theatre. Several of our Honors Program students will likely be dancing and doing choreography for the performance. Give your name to the ticket sellers and we will reimburse the Dance Theatre for the cost of your ticket (normally, $5.00). There is NO COST for this event.
Thursday, December 4, all day
Senior Thesis Presentation Event
This is an opportunity to see for yourself what will be required of you when you become a thesis-writing senior! Come and support your fellow honors folks who will be giving their senior thesis oral presentations. The topics will be varied and an exact program will be distributed in advance of the event that will be in the Kennamer Room in the Powell Building between 2:00 and 9:00 pm. For Chautauqua credit, you need to attend a minimum of two presentations (each lasts about 30 minutes). This event includes a supper buffet starting at 5:00 pm in the Regents Dining Room, so be sure to take advantage of the fine cuisine. There is NO COST for this event.
*You should sign up as soon as you’re ready to make a commitment (and that means a firm commitment!) as spaces are limited for some of these events.
*Spouses and guests are welcome at all events, when space permits.
*Additional events may be added to the list of official Chautauqua events but only by Linda!
